Kai Havertz's 16th-minute tap-in from Declan Rice's low cross gave Arsenal their first Premier League win at Anfield since 2012 and sent them three points clear at the top. Liverpool had 17 attempts and not one on target.

At the other end, Manchester United's 2-0 defeat at Chelsea made it nine games without a win in all competitions, their longest run since 1988. They are above the bottom three only on goal difference. Lisandro Martinez was sent off and Cole Palmer scored the penalty.

Michael Carrick is expected to be in charge for Tuesday's Champions League game against Roma. Fabrizio Romano said this morning that United intend to "trust" him for the games before the international break.

The Verdict

Arsenal didn't need to be pretty at Anfield, they needed to be stubborn, and they were. After their Carabao Cup humbling by Fleetwood it was exactly the right answer, and a side that can win like that in October will be very hard to shift.

Middlesbrough are the story of the Championship. Will Lankshear has fifteen goals and it's still October.

The Pink's call: United have to beat Roma, or the international break will feel like a long one for Carrick.

PREMIER LEAGUE, 8PM, ST JAMES' PARK

NEWCASTLE v EVERTON: ROUND TWO

Four days after Everton won 3-1 in the Carabao Cup, the sides meet again in the league. Everton trail Newcastle by a point after eight games, and they have won on each of their last two visits to St James' Park.

Team news: Newcastle are without Tino Livramento (knee) and Ewen Jaouen (thigh). Will Osula twisted his ankle on Thursday and is a doubt, as are Lewis Miley and Matias Fernandez-Pardo. Harvey Barnes is due to make his 100th Premier League appearance for the club. Everton expect Jarrad Branthwaite to be through concussion protocols. Jack Grealish, left out on Thursday for a breach of club discipline, may or may not return.

Joe Low, Bradford 0-3 Huddersfield

Ilias Bronkhorst's looping throw-in was only half-cleared and Cameron Humphreys lobbed it back into the box. When Aden Baldwin's second clearance bounced up, Low swung himself into an overhead kick and hooked it into the top corner. It was his first goal of the season.

Carrick: nine without a win

The home end at Stamford Bridge sang "you're getting sacked in the morning" at Michael Carrick. Asked whether he expected to stay in charge, he said only: "Yeah." The Athletic reports that United's hierarchy privately agreed to wait until the November international break before deciding his future. That leaves Roma on Tuesday and Aston Villa on 8 November.
