CHAMPIONSHIP

KONE'S HAT-TRICK IN FOURTEEN MINUTES

QPR 5, Swansea 0. QPR: Richard Kone 2, 9, 15 pen, Jimmy Dunne 45+1, 86. The fastest hat-trick in England's top four divisions in more than two decades, and the Championship leaders are taken apart at Loftus Road

Fourteen minutes and forty seconds. That's how long it took Richard Kone to score a hat-trick at Loftus Road, the quickest in English football's top four divisions since Opta started keeping records in 2004. Before Saturday he hadn't scored since April.

Swansea arrived with the best defence in the Championship. They'd conceded eight goals all season and went home having let in five.

The first came inside two minutes. Stephen Welsh lost the ball weakly to Kwame Poku in the centre circle, and Paul Smyth surged into the space and squared it for Kone, who was unmarked. Seven minutes later Kealey Adamson won the ball off Melker Widell, Poku swung in a left-footed cross, and Kone headed it into the far corner.

Then Lawrence Vigouroux brought Smyth down, picking up a booking for it, and Kone rolled in the penalty. Three-nil, and the 17,504 at Loftus Road could hardly believe what they were watching.

It could have looked different. Adam Idah's 20-yard drive was tipped on to the bar by a diving Pierce Charles, and Charles denied Widell just before the third went in. But QPR were ruthless with everything that came their way. Jimmy Dunne rose to head in Harvey Vale's corner in first-half stoppage time to make it 4-0, and the game was over before the interval.

Vitor Matos changed two players at half-time and Swansea saw most of the ball afterwards, without ever looking like getting back in it. Dunne made it five with four minutes left, sticking out a leg to steer Kone's wayward shot into the net. There was a warm welcome back for Karamoko Dembélé, too, ten months after his knee injury.

Kone told the BBC he'd be keeping the match ball on top of a new cupboard he'd just bought. He's earned the space.

Where it leaves them: QPR 9th on 20 points; Swansea 2nd on 26 points. The meanest defence in the division had let in only eight all season. Swansea stay second regardless, but QPR's five goals lift them into the play-off places.

SAINTS STORM THE LONDON STADIUM

West Ham 2, Southampton 3. West Ham: K. Walker-Peters 24, T. Soucek 90; Southampton: K. Matsuki 2, J. Bree 11, L. Dobbin 34. Three goals in 34 minutes leave West Ham chasing all afternoon, and Soucek's stoppage-time reply comes too late

Some of the 62,250 inside the London Stadium were still finding their seats when Kuryu Matsuki slotted into the far corner. Two minutes gone, one-nil Southampton, and the tone was set.

By the 11th minute it was two. James Bree, a full-back with no business being where he was, scored from the tightest of angles, and West Ham's afternoon already looked like an uphill climb.

To their credit, the hosts answered. On 24 minutes Divine Mukasa found Kyle Walker-Peters, and he placed the ball into the top corner. For ten minutes the ground found its voice.

Then it went quiet again. Lewis Dobbin struck from close range on 34 minutes, and Southampton went in at the break 3-1 up, with the points already in their pockets.

West Ham threw everything at the second half. They had 56 per cent of the ball and 28 shots, 11 of them on target, and Tomas Soucek, Pablo, Piroe and Austbo all came off the bench to try to turn it. Southampton bent but would not break, with Daniel Peretz behind a back four that defended the lead with plenty of grit.

The reply came in the third minute of stoppage time, when Soucek turned in Valentín Castellanos's pass. It made the scoreline respectable, but no more than that.

Southampton managed only 15 shots of their own, but three of them went in when it mattered. They had won the game in the first 34 minutes, and West Ham spent the rest of the afternoon finding that out.

Where it leaves them: West Ham 8th on 22 points; Southampton 5th on 23 points. West Ham stay third despite the defeat, but Southampton's win in east London keeps them sixth and very much in the promotion race.
