ROBERTS OFF THE BENCH AS MAGPIES WIN THE DERBY
On for four minutes, Callum Roberts scores from distance, Kanu adds a second, and Mansfield's unbeaten run is over
Mansfield came into the derby unbeaten in six League One games and with home advantage in front of 9,890 at the One Call Stadium. They had more of the ball and three times as many corners. Notts County had the two moments that mattered, and the first came from a player who had only been on the pitch for four minutes.
Conor Grant had already forced a save from Liam Roberts when he went off injured on 25 minutes. His replacement, Callum Roberts, took Rory Finneran's pass on 29 minutes and struck a left-footed shot from outside the box into the top corner.
Belshaw keeps the Stags out
Mansfield's response was spirited. Jon Russell had been denied by James Belshaw before the goal, and after it the home side threw crosses into the box. Michael Smith headed wide from Stephen McLaughlin's cross, then had a shot from a tight angle saved. Tyler Roberts had a header saved from Jordan Bowery's delivery, and Ryan Sweeney had a header blocked from close range.
At half-time it was 1-0, and Notts nearly doubled it within a minute of the restart. Luka Smyth headed against the right post from Ishé Samuels-Smith's cross.
Kanu doubles it
Smyth missed a fast break, and Callum Roberts shot tamely at the keeper when he had time to pick his spot. Then, on 66 minutes, Louis Reed made a horrendous blunder, Daniel Kanu took full advantage, and his right-footed shot from the middle of the box went into the bottom corner.
Mansfield emptied the bench. Rhys Oates, Luke Bolton, George Maris, Frazer Blake-Tracy and Elliott Hewitt all came on. Smith headed high and wide from a corner, and in stoppage time Smith and Blake-Tracy both had shots blocked. Notts held firm, with Max Sanders, Lee Ndlovu, Darius Lipsiuc and James Gibbons helping them see it out.
The numbers
Mansfield had 60 per cent of the ball and nine corners to three, but Notts had more shots, 16 to 14, and more on target, five to four. Belshaw made four saves.
It was a first league defeat in seven for Mansfield, and their first at home in the league since February. For Notts, it was a first League One away win of the season, and a derby win that lifts them away from the bottom four.
"We didn't deserve anything"
Nigel Clough did not look for excuses.
We didn't deserve anything, Notts County played extremely well from the first minute and to the last deserved to win. We were a shadow of what we have been in recent weeks. There is a manner to lose and it is bitterly disappointing.
Nigel Clough, Mansfield Town boss
Their first goal was a brilliant goal but you can't afford to go down to 10 men. We have to defend it better.
Nigel Clough, Mansfield Town boss
Martin Paterson was delighted, and careful not to get carried away.
It was a very good performance and I thought we were good value for it. It is a really, really good win but it is still early in the season. We still have a lot of work to do and a lot of mountains to climb at this level.
