Eighteen shots, one point and no goals at Turf Moor, where the wait for a home league win goes past a full year

Fabio Celestini had promised Burnley's supporters a team "playing with belief from the first whistle". In his first game since his appointment on Wednesday, in front of 18,811 at Turf Moor, he got that much. What he didn't get was a goal.

Burnley had 18 shots to Portsmouth's five and 1.73 expected goals to 0.25. They hit the target four times. Nicolas Schmid saved all four, and John Mousinho's side, who had warned all week that the Clarets would be "incredibly dangerous" under a new head coach, went home with a point.

All Burnley, no breakthrough

Burnley set about Pompey from the start. Marcus Edwards had a shot blocked inside two minutes and Largie Ramazani another five minutes later. Andréas Hountondji headed over from Josh Laurent's cross on 19 minutes.

The pressure built just before the half-hour. Kyle Walker drew a save from Schmid in the top of the net, and from the corner Edwards lifted a close-range shot over. Five minutes later Jamie Vardy nodded down for Hountondji in the centre of the box, and again Schmid was equal to it.

Hountondji had another header blocked from Lucas Pires's cross, and Ramazani tested Schmid from distance before the break. Portsmouth's only efforts of note were from outside the box; Adrian Segecic's was blocked on ten minutes, and Abu Kamara and Ryan Kavuma-McQueen were both caught offside.

Pompey reshuffle, Burnley run out of ideas

Mousinho changed things at half-time, sending on Ebou Adams for Segecic, and replaced Kavuma-McQueen with Tyrese Shade five minutes after the restart. Vardy had a shot blocked before he was replaced by Jaydon Banel on 62 minutes, and Kamara fired high and wide at the other end.

Celestini sent on Josh Cullen and Aaron Ramsey, and Burnley kept probing. Ramazani blazed over from the centre of the box on 70 minutes, and Banel did the same from Ramazani's cross six minutes later.

Josh Murphy, back after missing ten games, came on for Pompey and shot high and wide from a corner. Terry Devlin and Thomas Waddingham were also sent on in the final ten minutes. Schmid had one more save to make, keeping out Ramazani's drive from outside the box on 90 minutes, and Murphy dragged a shot wide in stoppage time.

Burnley will take heart from the way they played, and a win would have lifted them out of the relegation zone. But they have now gone more than a year without winning a league game at Turf Moor, and good performances alone will not get them out of the bottom three. Portsmouth lacked a cutting edge, but they have now gone five league games unbeaten.

A birthday without the present

It was Celestini's birthday, too.

It is my birthday, three points would be a perfect present. But it was a perfect birthday because the fans were incredible with me.

Fabio Celestini, Burnley head coach, to BBC Radio Lancashire

It was a solid performance. I know these games can be very difficult and the team can be fragile. We fought for 95 minutes and I saw a good spirit, a good dynamic. That is the first step but not enough.

Fabio Celestini, Burnley head coach, to BBC Radio Lancashire

Mousinho was honest about the first half and happy with the point.

We weren't at it in the first half. We got a bit lucky, but we were better in the second half.

John Mousinho, Portsmouth head coach, to BBC Radio Solent

The difference between the sides was they created more in the final third; on a day like that you take the point and move on.
