TWINE STINGS BOLTON IN STOPPAGE TIME

Bristol City trail with six minutes left, then two substitutes and a sweeping counter turn it round at Horwich

For 84 minutes Bolton had done what was asked of them after last Friday's 5-1 hammering by Middlesbrough. They had come from behind, hit the woodwork and led. Then, in front of 21,706 at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, Bristol City's substitutes took it off them.

It was end to end from the start. Bristol City worked it nicely down the right on 13 minutes, Jason Knight put a dangerous low ball into the box, and Dom Ballard, totally unmarked in the six-yard box, tapped in. Where were the Bolton defenders?

The lead lasted three minutes. City backed off Josh Sheehan, Thierry Gale rolled it to him, and he picked out the bottom corner from long range. Bradley Collins had no chance.

Woodwork at both ends

Lorent Tolaj forced a great save from Jack Bonham and then had the ball in the net, only for the flag to go up. At the other end Collins brilliantly kept out a left-footed shot from Atsuki Ito.

Luke McNally headed Rio Cardines' free-kick against the post, and Sheehan was booked. Then Samuel Iling-Junior picked out Ito, and his low shot cannoned back off the frame of the goal. Iling-Junior slid one just wide before the break as well.

Dalby's touch

Tolaj had a second goal ruled out for offside early in the second half. Then, on 57 minutes, Bolton broke. Ito's shot was heading in, and Sam Dalby was alert enough to stick out a foot and divert it past Collins.

Bonham kept them ahead, beating away a McNally shot at his near post and then making a big save from Jed Wallace's low strike. City sent on Yu Hirakawa, Wallace, Scott Twine, Sam Bell and Adam Randell, and won three corners back to back.

With six minutes left, they got in behind on the left. Cameron Pring's cross found Bell all on his own, and he tapped in from close range.

Bolton went for it. Collins saved from Ruben Rodrigues and Kyliane Dong, and seven minutes were added on.

The sting in the tail

City had already seen a penalty appeal waved away when Hirakawa went to ground chasing a bouncing ball, and the bench were furious. Three minutes into stoppage time, they broke. Wallace worked it down the right and cut it back, and Twine slammed it first time into the bottom right corner.

Bolton had led with six minutes left. They were left with nothing, and Michael Skubala's side had their first win in five games.

"An incredible comeback"

Steven Schumacher, who had made eight changes after the Middlesbrough defeat, felt his side had the game where they wanted it.

I felt it was a game that we definitely should win or not lose because for 80-85 minutes of that game we were in complete control of it.

Steven Schumacher, Bolton manager, to BBC Radio Manchester

I think it was a big turning point when Chris Forino went off [with cramp]. We became a bit ragged after we had to make the changes in the back line and the game became a bit more stretched and they have got good players and they punish you.

Michael Skubala, celebrating his 44th birthday, credited the substitutions that won it.

An incredible comeback. I have just said to them in there the character of the guys is amazing.

Michael Skubala, Bristol City head coach, to BBC Radio Bristol

I thought if we make some really attacking changes at that point we are fast on transition and they want to keep the ball and moving it round slowly, we'll nick it and then we can get off.
