BOOS AT SELHURST AS MAGPIES STRIKE AFTER THE BREAK
Osula and Barnes score inside 11 minutes of the restart, and the pressure grows on Pierre Sage
Selhurst Park had been patient. A week on from a 5-0 thrashing at Brighton, the home crowd gave their side the first half. In the second, Newcastle took the game away from them inside 11 minutes, and the grumbles turned to boos.
The first half gave little hint of what was to come. Jean-Philippe Mateta couldn't make clean contact after Adam Wharton's free-kick pinballed around the box in the second minute, and the game drifted towards half-time goalless.
Whatever Matthias Jaissle said at the interval, it worked. Barely a minute after the restart, Jacob Murphy swung in an outswinging cross and William Osula turned it in at the near post. That's seven goals in 13 Premier League games for him.
Eleven minutes and it was over
Joe Willock thought he'd scored a second, steering in Joelinton's pass, but VAR ruled it out for offside. It barely mattered. Five minutes later Amar Dedić found Harvey Barnes inside the box, and Barnes hammered it home.
Palace's only real reply came on 71 minutes, when Dario Osorio curled one from distance and Lukas Hornicek tipped it wide. It was the Newcastle keeper's first save in more than an hour.
The noise is the consequence of the result of the team, and at the moment we don't have what we expect.
Pierre Sage, Crystal Palace head coach
We need to identify ourselves as a unit, as a team who also overcome setbacks, and that's what we did today.
Matthias Jaissle, Newcastle head coach
Sage insisted the noise was "only noise". But Palace have now conceded 19 Premier League goals, the most in the division, and that kind of noise is getting harder to ignore.
