HAWTHORNS HELTER-SKELTER

EDOZIE REPLY KEEPS SAINTS LEVEL

Price penalty rewards Albion's first-half dominance but Southampton hit back in an end-to-end top-six clash

WEST BROM 1 (Isaac Price 22 pen) SOUTHAMPTON 1 (Samuel Edozie 53)

Fourth met fifth at The Hawthorns and neither would give an inch. Isaac Price's first-half penalty put West Brom ahead, Samuel Edozie levelled after the break, and an end-to-end finish could have gone either way before it finished 1-1.

James Morrison's side were completely dominant before half-time, BBC Sport reported, but had only Price's 22nd-minute spot-kick to show for it.

“This is helter-skelter stuff. It's been some second half. It's still on for both teams.”
Adam Blackmore, BBC Radio Solent commentator

Tonda Eckert's Southampton were much improved after the interval and struck back eight minutes into the second half, Edozie slamming home from close range. Eckert himself was booked for dissent soon after.

From there it was open. Aune Heggebø, on as a substitute, drifted across the near post and steered towards goal from about four yards out, but Daniel Peretz got down to save. Lewis Dobbin went clean through for Saints at the other end and was denied by Max O'Leary.

Tom Fellows, who came through the Albion academy, came on against his old club to a polite round of applause from the home support and had a late effort blocked on the edge of the area. Albion nearly nicked it on the break: Ousmane Diakité drove the length of the pitch and teed up substitute Tammer Bany, whose shot clipped the outside of the post.

The draw leaves both sides in the play-off places. Albion, who won 3-1 at West Ham on Saturday, move to fifth on 25 points, with Southampton sixth on 24 after their four-point deduction.

"I think it was a fair result. I think it was two very good teams going at it," West Brom boss James Morrison told Sky Sports. "We were so dominant in the first half, especially doing that to the opposition, I don't think anyone's done that to them and the lads can be proud of that performance." He added: "But credit to Southampton, they came back and showed their class."

Southampton boss Tonda Eckert, also speaking to Sky Sports, felt his side had been too cautious early on. "I think we gave them too much respect in the first half for the quality they have on the ball and then changed at half-time and boys showed what they're about," he said. "We'll take the point and move on."

Price, who sent his penalty into the top corner, explained his choice: "The keeper told me I missed my last one to the left so I thought I'd put it to the right." Albion midfielder Jayson Molumby added: "Conceding early gave them momentum so we're disappointed with that."

BLUES ON THE CHARGE

BLUES BLITZ LIONS INSIDE HALF AN HOUR

Cochrane, Bird and Stansfield strike before the half-hour as Birmingham climb to second

BIRMINGHAM 3 (Alex Cochrane 1, Max Bird 16, Jay Stansfield 29) MILLWALL 0

Birmingham City had this one won before the half-hour. Alex Cochrane scored inside 49 seconds, Max Bird and Jay Stansfield followed, and a 3-0 win in front of 25,044 at St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park lifts Chris Davies' side to second in the Championship.

Cochrane's opener came from a long free-kick by goalkeeper Allsop. Millwall cleared it only as far as the full-back, and he drove it low into the corner from 25 yards.

Bird, on his first start for the club, made it two in the 16th minute. Jhon Solís found him in space, and Bird sidestepped his man and picked out the bottom corner from the edge of the box. Thirteen minutes later he turned provider, finding Stansfield, who cut in from the right and finished left-footed from the edge of the area.

Millwall were not without openings. Allsop saved a Taylor header from a Lyndon Dykes long throw and Lisbie fired the rebound over, while Dykes lifted one over the bar after a dangerous counter.

After the break Camiel Neghli hit the crossbar for the visitors, and substitute Carlos Vicente struck a post late on for Blues before Max Crocombe gathered the rebound.

The win makes it ten home games unbeaten, and BBC Sport noted it is the first time since 2009 that they have won three home Championship games in a row without conceding.

Millwall, who thrashed Derby 4-1 on Saturday, slip to 13th.

"Getting a margin in a game is wonderful as you can give yourself a cushion to work within," Blues boss Chris Davies told BBC Radio WM. "We were fluid, aggressive in the press, didn't give them time or give anything away."

Davies was not getting carried away by second place.

FRATTON FIREWORKS

DEVLIN DOUBLE DOWNS SWANS

Pompey strike twice in stoppage time to beat the Championship's second-placed side

PORTSMOUTH 3 (Terry Devlin 36, 90+2, Thomas Waddingham 90+8) SWANSEA 1 (Zan Vipotnik 85 pen)

Terry Devlin, handed the right-back shirt in one of John Mousinho's four changes, scored twice as Portsmouth beat high-flying Swansea under the Fratton Park lights.

Devlin put Pompey ahead in the 36th minute and they held that lead until the 85th, when substitute Zan Vipotnik levelled from the penalty spot.

Swansea did not get long to enjoy it. Devlin struck again in the 92nd minute, and fellow substitute Waddingham added a third deep in stoppage time, in the 98th minute.

It follows Saturday's goalless draw at Burnley and keeps Pompey's unbeaten run going, while Vitor Matos' Swansea, fresh from a 4-0 win over Blackburn, missed the chance to go top and drop to fourth. Tempers boiled over after the final whistle, with members of both coaching staffs involved in a confrontation in the centre circle, BBC Radio Wales reported.

"It was a massive win and a really important night for us," Pompey boss John Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent. "I was disappointed with the way we conceded. I thought it was a really soft penalty. We had opportunities on the counter attack but to respond to the equaliser in the way we did was magnificent."

Swansea boss Vitor Matos, speaking after the game, said: "It wasn't easy at the end but we want to be a team that stays emotionally balanced and calm in every situation. That is something we can improve."

NORWICH HIT FOUR AT PRIDE PARK

Derby 0, Norwich 4

Norwich City were out of sight by half-time at Pride Park and finished the job with room to spare, winning 4-0 to leave Derby County deeper in the mire.

Anthony Musaba opened the scoring after eight minutes, Paris Maghoma doubled it on 27 from Jack Stacey's pass and Darlin Yongwa made it three a minute before the break.

Jovon Makama added the fourth on 66 minutes with a right-footed drive from outside the box.

The numbers told the story as plainly as the scoreline. Norwich had 16 shots to Derby's four and seven on target to one, and the home side managed an expected-goals figure of just 0.24.

Derby have one win from 14 league games and stay 23rd on seven points. For Norwich, a third straight win lifts them to 12th on 18 points.

Derby host Bolton on Friday night, while Norwich go to Bristol City on Saturday lunchtime.

TAYLOR CANCELS OUT CLARK AS LEADERS HELD

Huddersfield 1, Luton 1

Luton Town took a point off the League One leaders, but they were within 45 minutes of all three.

Jordan Clark put the Hatters ahead five minutes before half-time from Kasey Palmer's pass. Huddersfield hit back four minutes after the restart, Joe Taylor converting Sanches Fernandes' delivery.

Luton pushed for a winner late on, with Nahki Wells heading over from close range and Clark lifting another chance too high. A crowd of 15,906 saw Huddersfield's winning run end, though they stay top on 29 points. Luton, unbeaten in five, sit third on 24.

Luton boss Jack Wilshere was satisfied with the way his side handled the leaders. "We scored in the first half and we felt in the second half we could go and take the game to them. We knew they were going to start fast. The idea was to soak that up," he said.

NORBURN STUNNER SETTLES IT AT SIXFIELDS

Northampton 0, Oldham 1

Oliver Norburn's strike from outside the box won it for Oldham Athletic at Sixfields, a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner after 70 minutes and his first goal for the club.

Oldham were without Kai Payne and Kane Drummond, who are serving bans after their red cards against Crawley. Calum Kavanagh had already hit the bar for the visitors. Northampton kept pressing, with Matty Warhurst having several efforts, but Mathew Hudson held firm in the Oldham goal.

"I thought it was a low quality League Two game to be honest and we've come out on the wrong end of the result," Northampton boss Chris Hogg admitted. "We didn't do enough to win the game." He added: "But we didn't take our chances and then we got done with a poor goal at the other end. It's frustrating and disappointing but that's football."
