THREE HEADERS AND A WALL CALLED SÁ

Wolves are two up inside a quarter of an hour, José Sá makes nine saves, and Cardiff's wait for an away win goes on

Cesar Peixoto had heard the Molineux moans even after beating Watford last weekend. In front of 29,852 he could not have asked for a better way to quieten them: two goals inside a quarter of an hour, a third before the hour, and José Sá to make sure Cardiff never got back into it.

Cardiff arrived in form, with ten points from their last five games, and finished with 61 per cent of the ball, 13 shots, nine shots on target and one off the woodwork. They still went home beaten 3-0, and still without an away league win this season.

Two headers in five minutes

Fer López, the only change from the Watford win, opened it on ten minutes. Hugo Bueno drove from deep in his own half and floated a pass into the area, and López stooped to head home as Calum Scanlon failed to track his run. It was the 22-year-old's sixth Championship goal of the season.

Five minutes later it was two. López spread it wide to Rafiki Saïd, who floated another ball behind a flat Cardiff back line, and the unmarked Adam Armstrong headed in his second goal in as many games. It should have been three when Nathan Trott passed straight to Saïd inside the area, but Saïd shot back into the goalkeeper's arms.

Brian Barry-Murphy's side did have their moments. Chris Willock had already drawn a save from Sá, and Jack Moylan forced another just before the game was stopped. Players pointed to the South Bank behind Sá's goal and medics were called into the home end. Play was held up for several minutes before it resumed. Cardiff said on social media that their thoughts were with those affected.

Wolves also lost Jordan James, with what looked like a hamstring problem, in the 36th minute, and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde came on. Before the break Sá kept out Calum Scanlon and Ollie Tanner, and Joel Colwill's header was blocked deep into the six added minutes.

Sá stands firm, Krejčí finishes it

Colwill tested Sá again straight after the restart and once more on 52 minutes. Then, on 58, Kieran Trippier swung in a corner and Ladislav Krejčí, far too free, headed in from close range for his second Wolves goal. Three goals, three headers.

Barry-Murphy sent on Rubin Colwill, Cian Ashford and Ronan Kpakio. Cardiff kept coming, but Sá saved from Alex Robertson and Ashford, then turned Yousef Salech's header onto the post, and Joel Colwill missed the rebound from a yard out. Top scorer Jack Moylan did put the ball in from close range, only to be flagged offside. Wolves, with Rodrigo Gomes back from injury off the bench, had chances on the break, and Gomes and Bellegarde both went close.

Cesar Peixoto had asked his players to be "main characters" this week. He liked what he saw.

The players followed the game plan amazingly. We sped the game up at the right moments. We know they press high, but they open up, and we can create chances, and we won a lot of balls high in the first half.

Cesar Peixoto, Wolves head coach, to BBC Radio WM

The environment in the stadium was perfect, so thank you to the supporters, and the win was for them.

Cesar Peixoto, Wolves head coach, to BBC Radio WM

Barry-Murphy was blunt about how the goals went in.

All three goals from our point of view were very disappointing and very soft. We came here – despite Wolves' reputation and where they've come from – to win the game, but we defended the box really poorly in those situations.

Brian Barry-Murphy, Cardiff City head coach, to BBC Radio Wales

Hugo Bueno, who made the first, wasn't getting carried away.

It's been a good day, a solid win for the team and we have to keep it like this - we have to go with the same mentality in the next game. We know this league is a bit crazy so we don't have to get crazy with this win.

Hugo Bueno, Wolves defender, to BBC Radio WM

Wolves committed 20 fouls to Cardiff's eight and collected four bookings. It wasn't always pretty, but it is now four games without defeat, their longest unbeaten run of the season, and three headers and a goalkeeper in this form will win a lot of Championship games.
