BARRY DOUBLE LIFTS MOYES INTO THE TOP FIVE

Gboho's poke put Coventry ahead on Lampard's return. Thierno Barry struck twice in five minutes, then teed up Dewsbury-Hall, as the boss equalled Catterick's 592-game record

EVERTON 3 (Thierno Barry 56, 61, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall 81) COVENTRY 1 (Yann Gboho 52)

In front of 52,395 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, Thierno Barry scored twice as Everton came from behind to beat Coventry 3-1 on the night David Moyes equalled Harry Catterick's club record of 592 games in charge. Frank Lampard's return to Merseyside ended in defeat, and the Toffees moved into fifth.

It was goalless at the break. Coventry had been competitive, and Jordan Pickford had already saved from Tatsuhiro Sakamoto before Jack Rudoni drilled wide. The visitors also felt they should have had a penalty when James Tarkowski tugged Caleb Yirenkyi's hair. Stuart Attwell and VAR decided it lacked the force for a foul.

“I wasn't quite so sure about a good performance. We got a performance, and we got a result, but I have to say Coventry made it really difficult for us. It was good, but in the end, we got the goals which mattered and when you win in the Premier League you take it because it is so hard to get the wins.”

Seven minutes into the second half, Yann Gboho, surrounded by three Everton defenders, poked Coventry into the lead. The Sky Blues had earned it. Five minutes later the game flipped. Vitalii Mykolenko's cross found Barry, and the striker headed Everton level. Before Coventry could settle, Barry had bundled in a second from close range. Two goals in five minutes, and the Hill Dickinson was bouncing.

“I wasn't quite so sure about a good performance. We got a performance, and we got a result, but I have to say Coventry made it really difficult for us. It was good, but in the end, we got the goals which mattered and when you win in the Premier League you take it because it is so hard to get the wins.” – David Moyes, Everton manager, speaking to BBC Match of the Day, via BBC Sport

“A lot of good stuff in the way we played, which makes it really difficult to lose the game. Big decisions affected the game, clearly. We have to keep working. I'm seeing progression in the team. We have to work hard. There is a good spirit with us and we have to keep improving.” – Frank Lampard, Coventry manager, speaking to BBC Match of the Day, via BBC Sport

With nine minutes left, Barry played Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall through. He took a touch and, from a tight angle, somehow beat Carl Rushworth at his near post. Only place he could have put it. A VAR check for offside came and went: Dewsbury-Hall was clearly on. Two goals and an assist for Barry; three points and a place in the top five for Moyes.

Coventry will have grumbles about the decisions that went against them. Lampard's side had impressed before the break and for a stretch after it. Once Barry struck twice, though, the night belonged to Everton. The Scot walked onto the pitch at the whistle to congratulate his players, including the two-goal striker who has now scored 10 times in 13 appearances this season.

DURÁN DOUBLE LIFTS CELTIC OFF THE MARK

Celtic 3, Beşiktaş 2

Celtic finally have a Europa League win on the board after a frantic second half at Parkhead ended 3-2 against Beşiktaş and snapped a run of three straight European defeats.

A goalless first half left the home crowd restless. Beşiktaş had more of the ball and more shots overall, and after the break they made it count. Júnior Olaïtan won a penalty on 54 minutes; Sam Johnstone saved it, then the Benin midfielder stabbed in the rebound. Martin O'Neill answered from the bench: Callum Osmand, Camilo Durán and Colby Donovan all arrived around the hour, and within a minute Osmand had drilled an equaliser into the bottom corner from the edge of the box, Callum McGregor's assist completing the move.

“A really good performance. Hearts and soul into the game. Just when I thought we were going to drop two points, we came back again. So much spirit.

FOXES SEE OFF CITY AFTER CUP SLUGFEST

Oxford City 2, Leicester 4

Leicester City beat Oxford City 4-2 at The MGroup Stadium to reach the FA Cup second round, with 3,462 watching National League North promotion hopefuls push the League One side all the way.

Louis Page opened with a long-range strike on 16 minutes. Leicester fan Scott Pollock levelled on 31, scoring direct from a corner. After the break Harry Howell's cross found Emil Riis for 1-2, and Kamari Doyle drilled a third on 59 before Josh Ashby chipped Oxford back into it on 62. Substitute Tom Watson sealed it on 82, firing across Jonathan Maxted.

Russell Martin's Foxes go into Monday's draw; Ross Jenkins' hosts go out with credit intact.

“The result was probably fair. We didn't do enough to win the game [although] we were definitely in the game. The players were superb.

RAMS FIGHT BACK TO EASE THE HEAT

Derby 3, Bolton 1

Derby County came from behind to beat Bolton Wanderers 3-1 at Pride Park and ease the pressure on manager John Eustace.

Rúben Rodrigues slotted Bolton ahead on 42 minutes from Gaizka Larrazabal's pull-back. Straight after the break Ryan Nyambe equalised — his first goal in more than 300 career appearances — and Jack Robinson put the Rams in front on 49. Rhian Brewster made it 3-1 in stoppage time, winning the ball high up and finishing into the top corner.

It is Derby's first home win of the season and only their second in the Championship, in front of 27,536.

“We changed the shape at half-time, and the response from the lads was outstanding. The chips were down, we're not going great in the league, and the character of the group showed. It's really important that we don't get carried away with this win, but we need to enjoy it.”
