Bristol Rovers v Cambridge United

Struggling Gas look to the Cup to turn their season

Steve Evans' Rovers have lost seven of their last nine in League Two. League One Cambridge arrive after a 6-0 Trophy romp.

We're probably at this stage; it will be a late decision on Bobby and Ellis. If they can become available, then it adds four players that, on any given day, could be in anyone's starting lineup.Steve Evans, Bristol Rovers manager Bristol Post

Bristol Rovers need a lift, and they will hope the FA Cup provides one at the Memorial Stadium tonight. Steve Evans' side have lost seven of their last nine League Two games. The latest was a 3-1 defeat at Fleetwood, where Aaron Loupalo-Bi, Rhys Bennett and Josh Robertson scored for the hosts.

Rovers have not won at home in three. Their last game at the Mem was a goalless draw with Swindon Town, a long way from the club-record 11 consecutive home league wins they managed before this slump. Their cup record offers some comfort: the Bristol Post notes they have not lost in the opening round since 2018/19.

Evans has reinforcements. Tommy Leigh and Kofi Balmer are back after suspension, and Bobby Kamwa and Ellis Harrison will be late decisions. Striker Joe Quigley, described after Fleetwood as no better than 60 per cent fit, is now "stripping at certainly 90 plus", Evans said. Riley Harbottle and Jack Aitchison are not expected back until December.

Cambridge United are eighth in League One with 21 points from 14 games. Neil Harris' promoted side are the division's best-performing newcomers, according to the Rovers club preview, but they are four league games without a win. The latest was a 3-0 defeat at Leyton Orient last weekend.

Tuesday's EFL Trophy tie offered relief. The U's thrashed Brighton & Hove Albion's under-21 side 6-0, with summer signing Callum Stead scoring twice. Cambridge United News reports Harris has no new major injury concerns. Sports Mole expects changes from midweek.

Cambridge go to Luton in League One next.
