YALCOUYÉ HEADS BRIGHTON INTO THE TOP EIGHT

Getafe 0, Brighton 1. Brighton: M. Yalcouye 64. Att: 8,007. Costinha's headed assist settles a cagey night in Getafe; Seagulls still yet to concede in the competition

A night of few clear chances at the Coliseum ended with Brighton parked firmly in the Conference League's top eight. Malick Yalcouyé's header on 64 minutes was enough, and Fabian Hürzeler's side left Madrid still without conceding a European goal this season.

Neither side found a way through before the break. Brighton had more of the ball — they finished with 63 per cent — but José Bordalás's men sat deep and forced the visitors to go the long way round. Costinha was booked early for a late challenge, then blazed over from outside the box after Yasin Ayari set him up. Half-time: 0-0.

“These games in the Conference League are different. You have to beat a low block. You have to understand what the opponents are looking for in the game. Therefore, you have to always be patient in these games and I think we did it today. We didn't play our best game, to be fair. We had a few moments where we were quite lazy with the easy things. We didn't do the simple things on the highest level but in the end we kept a clean sheet, third clean sheet in a row in this tournament and we scored a goal and I think we deserved to win this game.” – Fabian Hurzeler, Brighton manager, speaking to TNT Sports, via BBC Sport

The breakthrough was simple and decisive. Costinha headed the ball into the area and Yalcouyé, arriving unmarked, planted his own header into the top right corner past David Soria. One swing of the head, and Brighton led.

Hürzeler freshened it from there. Lewis Dunk had already made way for Luka Vušković at the break; Pascal Groß and Jaouen Hadjam made room for Diego Gómez and Maxim De Cuyper. Getafe threw on Enes Ünal and later Borja Mayoral as Bordalás chased the equaliser with three up front.

Ibrahim Osman almost made it two within seconds of coming on. Gómez whipped a ball across the six-yard box and Osman only had to meet it cleanly — the chance flew past his shins. Adam Virgo, on co-commentary, called it a huge opportunity. It was the last real scare for Getafe.

Brighton had 15 shots to Getafe's eight and put three on target. Verbruggen made four saves at the other end and the clean sheet held through three added minutes. Full time: 0-1. Seven points, fifth place, and still not a goal conceded. The Seagulls are making the Conference League look like home from home.

Where it leaves them: Getafe 31st on 1 point; Brighton 5th on 7 points. Seven points from three games put Fabian Hürzeler's side fifth in the Conference League table — already inside the automatic last-16 places — with five scored and none conceded
